Scentwork is a dog sport that is becoming increasingly popular to the average pet parent. Inspired by the work of scent detection dogs, scent work is an easy-to-learn dog sport that is fun for the dog and the handler. In a fun and friendly environment, the aim of this course is to teach our dogs to use that magical nose of theirs.

 

Why should you do scentwork with your dog?

- Builds trust – your dog is the leader in the team when it comes to scentwork, meaning as a handler you must trust your dog to take you to the 'Find'. This gives your dog a real opportunity to problem-solve and focus.

- Scentwork improves your bond and communication, as a handler, you must be watching your dog and looking closely at their body language to be able to notice the changes when they are getting closer to the target.

- It is a great way to satisfy and tire your dog out, as sniffing, and problem-solving is mentally stimulating.

- Scentwork can be a good way to introduce worried dogs to new environments or situations, if they are working and problem solving then they won't feel as worried.

Absolute Sniffer class

6 week course £100 - each lesson 45mins long

Claire is a qualified bronze instructor with UK Sniffer Dogs and will be the trainer leading this course. 

You and your dogs will learn:

• How your dogs smell
• How to teach a freeze indication and how to create duration on this
• Introducing your dog to line up searches of bags and pipes
• Introducing chair searches
• Novel environment searches
• Vehicle searches
• Increasing the duration of the dog's indication with distance and distraction
• indicating on a small amount of scent

Sniffing is a natural calming behaviour for dogs and mentally wears them out; 10 minutes of sniffing is like an hour run. It is great for working breeds, rescue dogs, puppies, dogs with arthritis and other medical conditions!

So, if you want to give your dog a job to do to prevent boredom, or you want to build a stronger bond between you and your dog, then this is the course for you!

What you will need:

• A Red Kong - you need to feed your dog from this for a week before the course - it MUST be red
• Lots of treats - think you have enough? you will need more. 
• Flat collar/harness and lead
• A dog with a nose!
• Bring a bed or mat to rest your dog between exercises. 

 

Absolute Canine Pet Dog Scent Trials 

£35 

Scent trials are an opportunity for you to show off your dog’s scent work skills.  It’s a mini competition where prizes for the winner and runner up can be won.

When you book you will receive an email a week before detailing what will be involved in the trial with a time slot. There will be 4 searches with multiple finds and allocated time for each search:

 Search 1: Pipe search (2 hides) 2 minutes  

Search 2: Chair search (1 hide) 1 minute

Search 3 – Novel item/area search (3 hides) 3 minutes

Search 4 – Vehicle search (2 hides) 2 minutes

Trial – 8 hides, 8 minutes, 4 searches

After the trial is over prizes and certificates will be handed out.

 

PLEASE NOTE: THESE TRIALS ARE ONLY OPEN FOR DOGS THAT HAVE COMPLETED OUR 6 WEEK SCENT CLASS OR HAVE COMPLETED THEIR BRONZE WORKSHOPS 1 AND 2 OF SCENT DETECTION WITH ANY UKSNIFFER DOG APPROVED INSTRUCTOR.
